There’s a child in the room With a permanent view Dissecting the silence as he isolates you I detonate – I permeate I resonate – Assimilate The Switch (kill it) There’s a slip in your tomb with a taste of the new Rejoice in the finite and the terminal you I detonate – I permeate I resonate – Assimilate The Switch (kill it) There’s a fool for a groom With designs upon you Bathing in limelight And he’ll idolise you… I detonate – I permeate I resonate – Assimilate The Switch (kill it)

"The Switch EP reunites founding members Martin Bowes and Julia Waller for the first time in two decades; with Anni Hogan contributing grand piano, the title track presents the classic Attrition blend of pulsating electronics with classical orchestrations and eerie vocal layer. Furthermore, the EP features remixes of “The Switch” by Y-Luk-O, Martine, Oneirich, Satori, as well as an interpretation of “WITCH” by Jenna Leigh Raine..."

ATTRITION-“THE SWITCH” (EP)
(Two Gods Production: 58GODSDIG, DL, 23.20.2023)

You’d expect a band well into their fourth decade to be slowing down somewhat, but that’s certainly not the case with Coventry black magic musicians ATTRITION. Having toured the UK, Europe, North America and Japan pre-Covid, and are plotting a new album for post-pandemic (tentatively titled “The Black Maria” (doesn’t that sound cool!)), it is proving to be an exciting time, and the band unleash their latest EP, “THE SWITCH” as a mouth-watering Hors d’oeurve to the promised album.

Recorded at vocalist/songwriter Martin Bowes own Cage Studios, “The Switch” reunites founding members Martin and Julia Waller (for the first time in two decades) and adds Anni Hogan on grand piano for a title-track that pulsates and seethes as only classic Attrition can. It’s a track that immediately brought to my mind “The Covenant, The Sword, And The Arm Of The Lord”-era Cabaret Voltaire. It begins with piano chords bamping in the dark before keys tinkle like icicles in bright winter sun, and it is this push and pull between light and shade that characterises the song as it bursts into life with an irresistible beat, and the ‘The Switch’ will ululate between the two over five disorientating minutes. I always get the feeling that Attrition are a band peeling back the veneer that covers the reality in which we exist to provide a glimpse of the ghostly world beneath, and that’s exactly what ‘The Switch’ does. Some choice samples create an unsettling air as unearthly voices echo in the ether while that beat pulls you along; it’s rather like a musical ghost train; you know you shouldn’t look and enjoy it, but you can’t help yourself.

What follows are four re/mixes of ‘The Switch’, but rather than being carbon copies, they all put their own spin on proceedings. The Y-Luk-O Infuse Mix gets down into the nuts and bolts of the original to expose its beating heart, while the Digital rmx by Martine adds a definite retro/Carpenter Brut vibe. The Satori Mix has a dark NIN aesthetic and the Oneirich Remix is sure to blow your tweeters. WITCH (by Jenna Leigh Raine) is, despite its caps rage title, a discombobulating affair, and is one that, in conjunction with the preceding five tracks, should whet your appetite for the forthcoming album, and personally, I can’t wait.
