Dante's Kitchen review from Sideline magazine. 2004

Dante's Kitchen brandishes a reborn sound for Attrition, abundant with new influences and passion.
Certainly, one can draw a few comparisons to the sound the fluxes throughout. The eerie opera of Die Form, the sultry rhythms of recent Massive Attack, and the alien organics of perhaps Coil.
Preceded by the introductory tortured violin of "Andante", the disc plunges into the disjointed dance macabre of the title track. Martin Bowes gravel voice bristles across break beats as high-pitched female operatic pleads for divine help.
"The Head of Gabriel" continues with reptilian grace; an elastic bass beat twang here summons the shimmer of ghostly ethereal vocal as the violin flutters around like a moth lost in the piece's trance. Warm warbling waves of bass carry driftwood banshees and samples through "The Long Hall", before being disrupted by a frenetic rhythm, as their chanteuse is chased by a retro horror keyboard line.
"A Ladder" is a seething dub exploration that bounds through in nocturnal slow motion, while the subterranean samba of "Two Gods" is enhanced by doom-laden violin while the title repeated as a mantra. "Dreamcatcher"
exhales a nightmare underneath banshee wails and nightmare-depicting dialogue samples, spilling out natural drums that somewhat slice through its claustrophobic tension.
Attrition also delves back into their worlds of dark ambience. "Feed the Crow" is a grim piece haunted by the hiss and clunk of ancient steam tunnels amidst the choppy flutter of electronics and banshee sighs.
Finally, the closing "Still Life?" glistens with ambient textures and the birdcall of flutes before being drenched in a field recording of a foreboding storm. Overall, I find Dante's Kitchen is balanced precisely between ominous soundtracks and the vivid thrum of fetish-istic techno.
Enthralling as well as eerie, it might be their best effort to date.

Track Name: Dante's Kitchen
Dante's Kitchen

Sometimes I find
I re-assemble my mind
To accept the design
Of my kitchen tonight

Took a part time lover
Like Dante's brother
Heaven help us…

Sometimes i'm kind
To acquaintance of mine
It's getting hard to decide
If my kitchen is right

Took a part time lover
Like Dante's brother
Heaven help us…

Sometimes I'm blind
And my hands are so tied
To the walls that I climb
In my kitchen tonight

Took a part time lover
Like Dante's brother
Heaven help us…

Took a part time lover
…to quieten my mind.
Heaven help us…
Track Name: The Head of Gabriel
The Head of Gabriel

Bring on your acolytes
Pre-madonna sybarites
I sacked the shamanite
- give me Gabriel's head
- give me Gabriel's head

on a dit
la tete de Gabrielle

I met the suffer-gent
Pre-medicated diplomat
Disturbed insomniac
- give me Gabriel's head
- give me Gabriel's head

il a dit
l'âme de Gabrielle

Outsold the sacrifice!
Re-dedicated autocrat
Saturated serpent's eye
- give me Gabriel's head
- give me Gabriel's head

tu a dit
la vie de Gabrielle
Track Name: Two Gods
Two Gods

I'll take you by the hand and make you one
And leave you by the river when I'm done
And walk across the water to the sun…

Two Gods…
Bet on two Gods

I'm naked and I'm hungry in my room
I'm tearing arms from deities for fun
This hell is like a holiday, with guns…

Two Gods
Bet on two Gods

I'll bring a little magic to your room
And pass to the assassin who has none
He's taking out the tyrant, for his son

Two Gods
Bet on two Gods

Two Gods
Are better than one…
Track Name: The Ladder
The Ladder

I'm the guest you can undress
with conversation…
I'm the box pandora lost
Too complicated

What am I?
What am I?

I'm the asp in Eva's lap
An aspiration…
I'm on the ex-offender's list
I'm reccomended…

What am I?
What am I?

I kicked the virus from your silence
Good medication…
I killed the siren on your island
Self preservation…

What am I?
What am I?

In my mind's eye…
Track Name: Feed The Crow
Feed the crow

Someone praying on my time…
A fading, former friend of mine…
I trawl the junkyard of my mind…

Feed the crow I left behind.

I'll crawl along the countermine…
Dropping pennies onto beggars eyes..
I play the arcades of desire…

Feed the crow I left behind.
Track Name: The Long Hall
The Long Hall

Met your devil, on the D-train,
(you know americans…)
Lost a child to the raven,
(getting well again?…)
I fear,
I fear
Logic is the lover of men…
And fear
Fear is the mother of pain.
Or the Raven…

lay you down
and rest
in peace

Ignis spiritus
Ignis caritatis
